Preface: What if Heinemann threw out the original F5D Skylancer design, and entertained a J79 powered F5D-2 (redesignated F-7 from 1962) 'Super Skylancer' to best both the Vought F8U Crusader (later F-8) and Grumman F11F-1F Super Tiger as a single engine lower-cost, radar equipped fighter on Essex class carriers, to complement the higher-cost, dual engine F4H (later F-4) Phantom II from super carriers? What would that do to the F-8? How might it have done in export sales? Versus even the F-104 Starfighter in Europe? Even the Israeli's in 1967 when France cut them off from the Mirage V? And how might that affect other history, even the Argentine Air Force and the US Navy's Top Gun in the 1980s?
